Nagarjunakonda, archaeological site in western Andhra Pradesh state, southern India, consisting of an island in Nagarjuna Sagar, a reservoir created by damming the Krishna River there. The site is notable for the remains of its ancient Buddhist monuments (dating from the 1st to the 3rd century ce) and for an ancient university (3rdโ€“4th century) where Nagarjuna, the founder of the Mahayana school of Buddhism, once taught. An archaeological museum there contains many of the areaโ€™s artifacts.
